Happy New Year

Todays picture is of a Portland area favorite, Widmer Hefeweizen. Brewed by the Widmer Bros. Brewing Co. in Portland, it was the first American style Hefeweizen and is still one of the most popular wheat beers in the US.

I thought it was a fitting picture for the New Years Eve festivities to be enjoyed tonight!

Wishing you a happy, safe and healthy 2009!

Ice Wall

I did not take this picture recently (actually back in 2005) but with the cold weather we have been having, it made me think of it and pull it from my archives. Taken up on Mt Hood, the conditions that year were just right where it had not snowed enough to keep us from hiking up to a waterfall we know of. There was this wall of icicles. Something that normally you would not be able to get to since the snow at this steep location reaches 10 ft or more. But something told me that day to go check it out, and I am glad I did!

Multnomah Falls

Multnomah Falls is a huge tourist landmark that is about 20 min east of Gresham. All last week Multnomah Falls was pretty much inaccessable, due to the fact that I-84 was closed because of the weather. This happens often this time of year, and especially when things were as bad as they were.

Warming Up

Most of the snow has rapidly melted, creating flood watches in many areas.

The temperature has FINALLY risen enough to encourage some thawing around the area.

End on the Horizon???

It did snow a bit this early afternoon, but not much compared to the past few days. I saw a bunch of birds out and couldnt resist this little guy with the snow on his beak. Hopefully we can start to see some thawing in the next few days!!!

State of Emergency

The mayor of Gresham has declared our town in a State of Emergency. The reason behind this decision is because emergency vehicles are not able to reach residents in southern Gresham, which begins a block north of where I live. The snow has reached almost 2 feet in the flat areas, with drifts going above my bottom windowsills. My car, well, its just a mound of snow. You cant see it at all.

Be safe, Gresham!!!

Winter Solstice

Almost ironically, today is the first official day of winter. Last night was a crazy, stormy, snowy, windy, icey night. This morning the Portland Metro area, including Gresham, has pretty much come to a stand still.

At my house the foot of snow is covered by a thick layer of ice. The trees make a funny crackling sound in the wind.

Chance of accumulation = 100%

There are predictions of another 6-10 inches of snow in the next 24 hours. Once the snow finishes falling, then a wave of ice rain is going to coat it all. I have a feeling I will be stuck here at home for a while. My car is parked in the parking lot of my complex, and the only way out is to navigate a hill. I am not hopeful that I can get out any time soon.

Took this pic of the snow just now with my UV lens. I like how it brought out the icey crystals and the blue hues :)

The snowmen are out

Driving the streets through town you often see the hard work of the kids that have been kept home from school all week. This little guy was waving his tree branch hands in the wind :)

More of the same

Its dumping snow again this morning. Last night it actually rained, so it melted away most of what was out there, but a fresh new layer fell to take its place.

More on the way (???)

So as of this morning, no new snow. For now, all thats left is ice!

But the Portland Public School system is closed in anticipation for a weather front heading our way. I just checked the doppler radar and sure enough, there is moisture over the westside of Portland. We are on the eastside, and it is heading our way. So we wait to see what happens.

Frozen Solid

And the cold weather continues. The main roads are pretty clear, but the side roads are a block of ice. Very hard to drive and get around. This is a picture of a puddle that froze solid. They are predicting more snow starting as early as later tonight. Is it summer yet?

Snow Day

We ended up getting just about an inch of snow where I live, but on the other side of Gresham I have heard they got 3-6 inches. Just enough to make the roads icy and all the schools closed today, which means I did not go to work either. I hope it clears up enough that I can drive tomorrow. Although, they are predicting we get hit with snow again Weds and Sat. :( I have not even come close to finishing my Christmas shopping. And now I am stuck at home!!!

Clouds are rolling in

The forecast is still saying snow this weekend. I will believe it when I see it. Right now, there is a definite difference in the skies. I did a double take when I walked out my front door to go to work this morning. It is DARK out. The storm clouds are coming in. This could be interesting. Only time will tell :)

Foggy Day

I can barely see the sun trying to shine thorough the thick foggy, cloudy cover.

Frost is finally here!

I came out to my car this morning and had to break out my ice scraper!!! I know I have posted a lot about how warm the weather has been staying (with the exception of a colder windy day last week), but the forecasters are saying the end of that warm weather is upon us. I even heard the prediction of snow! (I HIGHLY doubt that tho). Welcome, Winter!

Intense Sunset

Last night, right before leaving work at 5, I noticed that everything was glowing pink in the parking lot. I looked out the window and saw this most intense sunset. I grabbed my camera out of my car and walked to the edge of the wooded area beyond the lot and snapped a few shots. This one shows the crazy colors the best!

Warm(ish) Weather

Despite it now being into the first week of December, the weather has remained almost warm-ish! Its almost 50, which is highly unusual for this time of year. I still have yet to have seen any frost on the cars or grass in the morning. I hope this means an early spring, and not a late, horrible cold winter!!!

Saturday was the 112th Civil War game between the Oregon State Beavers and the Oregon Ducks. We were lucky enough to have been able to go. Even though the Beavs did not win, it was SOOOO fun. We really had a blast! If they had to lose, at least we were there to see the most important game of the year and root the Beavs on.

I love this pic. As the sun was going down over the Civil War on Sat, the moon came out. GORGEOUS!!!

See you again next year, Ducks.......GOOOOO BEAVS!!!

Mountain in Autumn

Face it, there will always be many postings with pictures of Mount Hood on this blog, since it is the focus of our area. Love the pink autumn glow in this capture.

Happy (pre) Thanksgiving

Happy Thanksgiving (in advance)... Have a happy and healthy holiday!

Autumn "Magic"

A while back I happened upon this leaf that was held up in midair by a thin line of spider silk. I loved the way it was so bold against the black background. I am officially ready for Thanksgiving, are you? I have been wasting some time playing this Turkey Shooter Game. My first score was 15021.

Monday, November 24, 2008

It has not frozen yet (at least not enough that by the time I go to work it has not melted). However, it has been quite foggy lately. Winter is right around the corner!

You'll have to excuse me

I love taking pictures of mushrooms. So you will have to bear with me as I post yet another. I just think they are so interesting and unique, and you cant find a better selection than the ones that grow this time of year!

Love the colors!

I am such a talented gardener, now that the rest of my plants are dying away, the ones that can ripen are! These little peppers are finally changing colors. If I can get out there during daylight, I will have to snap a shot of my equally pathetic cherry tomatoes ;)

More of the same

In keeping with the postings of changing leaves and rainy weather....

Election Day

I am eagerly awaiting the outcome of the election today and hopefully it will not warrant moving out of the country.

So far, less rain than expected

I am not complaining that it barely rained this past weekend. The rainy season can hold off as long as it wants! But it has been sprinkling here and there.

Ground Cover

Another leaf pic. The trees are really turning now. It seemed to be just all of a sudden, from green to yellows and reds. Every time the wind blows, the ground looks like this.

I better get crackin' on my pumpkin carving cause Halloween is right around the corner!
And with that, a fun Pumpkin Simulator

Pears are ripening!

When someone typically thinks of autumn, they may think of pumpkins and corn. My favorite ripening food this season is the PEARS!! YUM!

Leaves are falling all around

Its getting colder and darker every day. When I go out to my car in the morning, it is covered in dew. Pretty soon that dew will give way to frost. Ick. Leaves are falling all around. Is it summer again yet?

Windy Day!

I am missing the summer already. Just a month ago when this was taken, this sunflower was at least still showing some signs of life. Now it is blown over in the present windstorm and rotting away from the wet. Today, the wind is so intense it is leaving all the trees pretty bare. The last remaining leaves are being forced to fall. Sad.

In keeping with the rain outside...

A few years ago, when I was still a total go-getter when it came to going out and getting the perfect shot on the perfect day, I got inspired. It was one of those classic rainy Oregon days, when they sky just opened up and started DUMPING. I was driving through the small town of Damascus where there is this cool old pioneer cemetery. I thought to myself it was the perfect time to brave the weather and try to get a shot or 20 out in that cool spot. This is my fave from that day.

All the colors of the rainbow

Happy Friday....

Taken from a friends back yard. Awesome.

This one is for my friend Kim. She is going to be Dorothy for Halloween!

Icky, but Cool!

The autumn spiders are out... Icky, but a cool photography subject.

Trying again!

I am trying the blog thing again. I always tend to start for a while, then quit cause I get bored. I will try again. Refresh those old pics and get them out there to be seen. Maybe even inspire myself to get out and take some new stuff, who knows!

Here is my first post of the new daily Mt Hood Area photoblog...

This picture was taken from Trillium Lake. It is one of my favorites. Clear and beautiful.

I will TRY to post every couple of days, with the exception of my very busy weekends. We will see how it goes.

Leave a comment if you like. Make a request, even better :)
