Flying Overhead

I am not sure what kind of birds these are. Some sort of hawk I assume. They can often be seen doing circles over Trillium Lake. All of a sudden, they rapidly drop down and pull a big fish out of the water. That was what I was waiting for when I took these, but they never dove.

UPDATE: Due to the help I received in my blog comments, I'm going to agree with the majority and say these are osprey. Thanks for your help everyone!

  4. They almost look like a Falcon? I was going to say Bald Eagle too but I don't think so...

They are different even tho they are majestic!

  6. Trillium Lake is our stomping ground:) We love it there. I think these are Osprey... it is fun to watch them fight over fish; often it ends up dropped back into the lake- it is a great little lesson on greed:)

  9. Looks like an osprey to me! They are fish eaters and that's exactly how they catch their prey.

  13. I think it's an osprey: Pandion haliaetus. A bit different from what I see on the east coast but similar enough that I'm fairly certain of my guess.

  15. Your birds are Osprey, a kind of sea eagle. Their primary food is fish and they always nest near and hunt from bodies of water, whether lakes, rivers, or even the ocean. Very nice shots and what a joy to see them! You can tell them from Bald Eagles because of the extensive white on their breasts and face. They have a black mask and their wings are bent at the wrist. They often hover over the water before diving in for a catch.
