Abandoned Route

A long time ago, I walked this road down to the Sandy River a lot. These days, there are many "No Trespassing" signs warning you not to proceed. The thick fog only added to the abandoned feel of the open area cutting through the thick woods.

Sunset Over a Foggy Sandy River

I was standing along the Sandy River right about dusk and was lucky enough to catch the slight bit of color that reflected off the thick rainclouds through the fog.

McCord Creek

I stood on the newly constructed bridge that is part of the Historic Columbia River Highway State Trail to take this photo of McCord Creek, winding its way through the ice below during last weeks deep freeze.

Wall of Ice

The cold weather freezes everything in the Columbia River Gorge. One of the most dramatic scenes are the weeping walls. In summer, these walls drip and trickle water from underground springs constantly. In winter, however, the consistent flow of water freezes into dramatic icicle displays. This one could be spotted when driving along I-84, directly east of Yeon State Park trailhead.

Base of Frozen Horsetail Falls

I had to post this one last photo I took of Horsetail Falls, the walls around the base beautifully adorned with glowing blue icicles. The pool itself was also frozen solid, with only the very bottom of the falls breaking through.
