Thunderhead cloud ©www.hoodphotography.com

On Saturday we spent the day at Frog Lake up on Mt Hood. There were some crazy big thunderhead clouds a ways away, but the skies above us were clear blue. We occasionally heard a very distant rumble of thunder that never reached our area.

Dusk over Trillium Lake

Dusk over Trillium Lake ©www.hoodphotography.com

I do not visit Trillium Lake as much as I used to. There are just way too many people. Only a few years back, you could go for the day to sit on the bank and fish and enjoy the peacefulness that the mountain lake had to offer with a handful of other groups of people doing the same thing. Then they did some pretty major construction on the south side of the lake where the dam is, creating a large bank for people to hang out for the day. Sounds nice, but it made the crowds explode. There were hundreds of people crowded into the dam area at the small lake this past weekend when I visited for the first time of the year, and we only spent a short time before moving on to another lake. We prefer quieter outdoor experiences. I did return at dusk and captured this much more peaceful moment as the sun went down in the west.

Frog Lake Frog

Frog Lake Frog macro ©www.hoodphotography.com

When I was a kid, my family would frequent Frog Lake every summer. It was and still is such a great place to spend the day. It is one of the less popular lakes up in the Mt Hood National Forest, which means it is less crowded -- a definite perk.

Back in the day when we went, the entire shoreline was littered with tiny dime sized frogs. You had to be very careful not to step on them as you walked around. The past few times I have visited, I didn't see even one frog, which was very disappointing. But I was up there this past weekend and there were quite a few! Yay!!! It was a challenge chasing them around with my camera to get a good macro shot of one of them, but this guy stopped just long enough for me to snap my shutter before he hopped away.
