Sword Fern

As the temperatures drop heading into winter and things start to freeze, the leafy plants that usually carpet the forest floor all die away. But not the hearty sword fern. It keeps its foliage and withstands the cold here in the Pacific Northwest, becoming the most prominent plant that you see if you brave the chill yourself and explore the woods. This frond glowed in the sunlight that streamed through the tree canopy overhead.
